When you’re a grandma, you’re more than just family—you’re their biggest cheerleader. You have the amazing superpowers of love, support, and encouragement. You already know this deep in your heart. All you want is what’s best for your grandkids, and you’d do anything to help them shine.

So how do we help them be their very best?

Start by doing what you already do so well. You know your grandkids better than anyone. You know how to talk to them, laugh with them, and lift them up when they need it. And if you want to take it a step further, try these 15 simple and loving ideas that can help bring out the greatness that’s already inside them.

1. Grow a Grateful Heart

Have you noticed how some people expect things without even saying “thank you”? Not in our family! I’m teaching my grandkids to have thankful hearts. We count our blessings together, say thank you often, and try to spread joy wherever we go. A grateful heart is a happy heart!

2. Be a Good Teammate

Losing a game can feel like a big deal—but it’s not the end of the world. I tell my grandkids that being a team player matters more than the scoreboard. We start with board games and grow into sports. It’s not just about winning—it’s about learning, making memories, and being a kind friend.

3. ABC: Always Be Creative!

Being creative helps us solve problems and have fun too! I love encouraging my grandkids to try new things—like drawing, painting, building, or crafting. I remind them often: “Always Be Creative!” With a little imagination, anything is possible.

4. Cooking and Baking = Sweet Memories

Eating tasty food is fun—but making it together is even better! I love teaching my grandkids how to cook and bake when they visit. We mix, stir, and laugh in the kitchen while making yummy dishes that they can be proud of. It’s a great way to spend time together—and a special chance to pass down family recipes they’ll remember forever.

5. Healthy Can Still Be Yummy!

Of course, there’s always room for Grandma’s decadent cookie dough bites—but balance is important! I try to show my grandkids that healthy living can be fun. We eat colorful fruits and veggies, drink lots of water, go on walks, and get plenty of rest. Taking care of our bodies helps us feel good inside and out!

6. Help Them Love Learning

Learning doesn’t stop when school ends. I believe learning is something we do every day—by asking questions, trying new things, and being curious. I love reading books with my grandkids, going to museums, and talking about the amazing world we live in. When we show them that learning is exciting, they’ll carry that love with them for life.

7. Take a Moment to Breathe

Life moves fast, doesn’t it? That’s why I remind my grandkids (and myself!) to slow down and enjoy the moment. We take deep breaths, notice the flowers, feel the sunshine, and listen to the birds. Just a few quiet moments can bring so much peace. Ahhh… isn’t that nice?

8. Kindness Is Always Cool

Whether someone is young or old, we all need a little kindness. I love showing my grandkids what it means to have a caring heart. We talk about being gentle with words, helping others, and being patient. A little compassion can make someone’s whole day better—and the world a little brighter too.

9. Hard Work Really Matters

Good things don’t just happen by magic—they take effort! I teach my grandkids that hard work is something to be proud of. We do small chores or fun projects together, and I show them how sticking with something can feel amazing. With a little elbow grease and a big heart, they can do just about anything.

10. Help Them Find Their Voice

Talking to others—whether it’s in front of a crowd or just chatting with the cashier—takes confidence. I try to show my grandkids how to speak kindly, clearly, and with a little spark of humor. When we lead by example, they learn to speak up and feel proud of their voice.

11. Curiosity Is a Superpower

You’ve probably heard the saying, “Curiosity killed the cat”—but not in this grandma’s house! I tell my grandkids that asking questions is a very good thing. When you’re curious, you learn more, understand better, and grow stronger. So go ahead—read more, wonder more, and don’t be afraid to ask why.

12. Never Give Up—Keep Going!

Sometimes things don’t go as planned. That’s just life. I tell my grandkids that it’s okay to mess up or fall down—as long as you get back up and try again. We talk through little problems and imagine how to fix them. It helps them learn how to bounce back, no matter what. That’s what being resilient is all about!

13. Feelings Matter Just as Much as Facts

Two young brothers sit on the grass in a backyard, joyfully pressing their foreheads together and smiling. The older boy leans in with a playful expression while the younger toddler looks up at him with a big grin.

Being smart is great—but being kind, thoughtful, and understanding is just as important. I help my grandkids talk about their feelings and learn how to handle them in healthy ways. When they know how to express emotions and care about others, they grow into strong, loving people.

14. Yes, You Can Fix It

Got a rip in your shirt? Let’s sew it! Leaky faucet? Let’s grab the toolbox and figure it out. I love showing my grandkids that they can fix things—with a little patience and a can-do spirit. Before long, they’re patching holes, building shelves, and feeling proud of their skills. It’s not just about repairs—it’s about confidence!

15. Patience Is Powerful

We all want things right now, but the best things often take time. I remind my grandkids to be patient—whether they’re learning something new or waiting for a turn. A little patience (and a lot of grace) goes a long way. And the more we practice it together, the easier it becomes.

Aren’t we lucky, Grandma? We get a front-row seat to watch our grandkids grow—and we get to help shape the amazing people they’re becoming. Keep doing what you’re already doing with love and care. And if you ever need a little extra help, I hope these tips make things easier. Let’s chat again soon, my sweet friend! 💖
