Looking for fun places to take your grandkids without spending a lot of money?

Good news—there are lots of fun spots you can visit for free! Kids don’t need fancy trips to have fun. Some of the best memories come from simple things like laughing, playing, and spending time together.

Here are some of my favorite free places to take my grandkids. They always have a great time—and so do I!

1. Museums

A joyful grandmother and her young grandson explore an art museum together. The boy, wearing a yellow shirt and blue backpack, points excitedly at something off-camera while the grandmother smiles warmly beside him, holding his hand. Classical sculptures and paintings decorate the background.

Museums are a fun way to teach your grandkids about history, science, and art. Many museums let you in for free or have special days when you don’t have to pay. You can check their website or call to find out. My grandkids love looking at all the cool things in the exhibits. We always learn something new when we go!

2. Parks

Parks are a great place to enjoy the outdoors and get some exercise. Some parks have playgrounds, others have walking trails, and some even have lakes or rivers. You can pack a picnic and spend the whole day there. My grandkids love swinging, sliding, and playing games like catch or frisbee. It’s always a fun and active day.

3. Concerts

Concerts are a fun way to let your grandkids hear new kinds of music. Many towns have free concerts in the park during summer. Look in your local newspaper or on a city website to see what’s coming up. We bring a blanket and snacks and enjoy the music together. We love singing, dancing, and having a great time!

4. Library

The library is a great place to help your grandkids enjoy reading. Many libraries have free storytime for young kids. You can also borrow books, movies, and music without paying anything. We love picking out new books to read, and we always leave with a big stack!

5. Beach

If you live near a beach, it’s a perfect spot to visit with your grandkids. You can build sandcastles, swim in the water, or just sit and enjoy the sunshine. Don’t forget to pack lunch, water, and sunscreen. My grandkids love finding seashells and running in the waves!

6. Farmer’s Market

The farmer’s market is a fun place to visit together. Many give out free samples of fruits, veggies, and baked goods. It’s also a great way to teach your grandkids about healthy food and why it’s good to shop local. We like choosing fresh fruits and veggies to take home and cook together.

7. Botanical Gardens

Botanical gardens are peaceful and full of beauty. Many let you visit for free. You and your grandkids can walk through colorful flower gardens and learn about all kinds of plants. My grandkids love looking at the flowers and trees. We always take lots of fun pictures!

8. Nature Reserves

Nature reserves are great for exploring the outdoors. Many are free to visit and have hiking trails, animals to see, and fun exhibits to learn from. Bring some binoculars so you can look closely at birds and animals. It’s always an adventure!

9. Art Galleries

If your grandkids like to draw or paint, take them to an art gallery. Lots of galleries have free days or don’t charge at all. You can look at paintings, sculptures, and other art. We like to talk about the colors and styles artists use. It’s fun and sparks creativity!

10. Historical Sites

Want to teach your grandkids about the past? Visit a local historical site. Many are free and have old buildings, landmarks, and stories about how things used to be. My grandkids love to imagine what life was like a long time ago. We always leave knowing something new!

11. Community Events

Check out free events in your town like parades, festivals, or outdoor movie nights. These are great ways to have fun together and feel connected to your community. My grandkids love getting their faces painted and dancing to live music!

12. Animal Shelters

Some animal shelters let visitors spend time with the animals for free. You and your grandkids can pet the cats or walk the dogs. It’s a great way to teach kindness and care for animals—and it always brings smiles!

In the end, there are so many free places you can take your grandkids without paying to get in. Museums, parks, concerts, libraries, and beaches are just a few great ideas.

Can you think of any others?
