25 Fun Budget-Friendly Activities Your Grandkids Will Beg to Do Again

Sharing is caring!

Kids are full of energy and love to stay busy all day long.

As grandmas, that can definitely keep us on our toes!

Of course, we want to give them the best and make every moment special. But sometimes, our budgets don’t match our big hearts—and that’s okay!

Even though a simple picnic at the park is always a hit, I started thinking of more fun and affordable ways to keep our grandkids happy and smiling. Here are some ideas I came up with that won’t break the bank but will still bring lots of joy:

1. Backyard camping

You don’t have to go far to have a camping adventure—just head to your backyard! Set up a tent, roll out the sleeping bags, and bring out the flashlights. Tell stories, make s’mores (even in the microwave!), and enjoy the night sky together. It’s all the fun of camping without leaving home.

2. DIY craft day

Pull out the glue, scissors, paper, and any craft supplies you have around the house. Let your grandchild make cards, decorations, or even homemade gifts. You can pick a theme—like holidays, animals, or seasons—or just let their creativity lead the way. Bonus: display their artwork proudly for everyone to see!

3. Storytime swap

Take turns reading books aloud—or better yet, make up your own stories together! One of you can start the story, and the other adds to it. Keep going back and forth until you have a silly, sweet, or surprising tale. It’s a great way to boost creativity and share a lot of laughs.

4. Volunteering

Volunteering with your grandchild is a great way to spend time together while doing something kind. Help out at a local charity, animal shelter, or community garden. You’ll be teaching your grandchild the joy of helping others—and making your neighborhood a better place, too.

5. Puzzle challenge

Set up a puzzle on a table and work on it together throughout the day (or even over a few days). Whether it’s a big jigsaw puzzle or a brain teaser, it’s a fun way to team up and stay focused. Celebrate with a little “we did it!” dance when it’s done!

6. Paper plane races

Grab some paper and start folding! Challenge your grandchild to make a paper airplane that flies the farthest, the fastest, or does the coolest tricks. You can even hold a little tournament. Warning: things might get hilariously competitive!

7. Library storytime and classes

I love the library! My grandkids and I could spend hours just picking out picture books. But the best part? Most libraries offer free events for all ages—like storytimes, hands-on classes, concerts, and more. Check your local library’s calendar to see what fun things are coming up!

8. Tea time

One of my favorite things to do—especially with my granddaughters—is to host a tea party. But guess what? My grandsons enjoy it too! Set the table with real (or pretend) tea cups, tiny sandwiches, and sweet treats. Then sit, sip, and enjoy some lovely conversation together.

9. Museums

Visiting the museum with your grandkid is an underrated budget-friendly activity!

Lots of museums offer free or discounted days for families. Take your grandchild and explore cool exhibits about history, art, or science. Some libraries even offer free museum passes all year long—just ask your local librarian! (I mentioned this in my big love letter to library cards!)

10. Cardboard box kingdom

Don’t toss those old Amazon boxes! Turn them into a magical kingdom with your grandkids. They can build castles, forts, or secret hideouts. Add some washable markers or crayons, and let them decorate their masterpiece. It’s amazing to see where their imagination will take them!

11. Farmer’s market exploration

Head to your local farmer’s market for a fun adventure. Walk around together, smell the fresh fruits and veggies, and try a few homemade snacks. It’s a great way to support local farmers and enjoy something tasty at the same time.

12. Dollar theaters

If you haven’t already, look for a nearby dollar theater. It’s a fun and affordable way to enjoy a movie together. These theaters usually show older movies—but trust me, your grandkids won’t mind one bit. The experience is what they’ll remember!

13. Balloon volleyball

All you need is a few balloons to start the fun! Try balloon volleyball, balloon soccer, or just see who can keep their balloon in the air the longest. It’s super simple and always gets lots of giggles. Just be ready for the occasional pop!

14. Community events

If you live near a city or a busy town, there are usually free or low-cost events happening all the time. Check your local calendar for things like outdoor movies, live music, or neighborhood festivals. These events are a fun way to explore your town and make special memories with your grandkids.

15. Chalk art gallery

Turn your driveway or sidewalk into your grandchild’s very own art gallery! Hand them some colorful chalk and let their imagination take over. When the drawings are done, take a slow walk together and enjoy their beautiful creations. It’s like your own little art show—right outside!

16. Scavenger hunt

This one’s a favorite because it can keep your grandkids busy for days—even weeks! You can make a nature walk scavenger hunt, a backyard treasure hunt, or even one inside the house. Try one at the park or playground too. There are so many fun ways to play, and your grandkids will love the adventure. Let your creativity run wild!

17. Splash pads at the park

When the grandkids get tired of running through the sprinkler at home, it’s time to head to a splash pad! Many parks have these built-in water play areas. They’re a fun and free way to cool off during those hot summer days.

18. Gallery walks

Many towns and cities have free art walks that show off local artists. In my neighborhood, businesses team up with painters or musicians and even offer little snacks and drinks. It’s a fun and tasty way to enjoy art with your grandkids—and learn something new along the way!

19. Baking bonanza

Put on your aprons and head to the kitchen for a baking adventure! Whether it’s cookies, cupcakes, or brownies, let your grandchild be the chef. They’ll love picking the toppings and decorations. And when things get a little messy? That just means you’re doing it right!

20. Living room obstacle course

Rearrange your living room and build a fun obstacle course! Use pillows, blankets, and laundry baskets to set it up. Then, let your grandchild race through it like a brave explorer. When they finish, give them a special title—like “Living Room Champion!”

21. Fishing

We already talked about lake days, but here’s another lakeside idea—fishing! Head to a quiet fishing spot with your grandchild for a peaceful day by the water. It’s a fun way to bond, and it teaches patience and a love for nature. And who knows? You might catch a big one!

22. Geocaching

Geocaching is like a high-tech treasure hunt. You use GPS and clues to find hidden boxes in cool places. These little “treasures” are all over the world—even in your own town! It’s a great way to explore together and feel like real-life detectives.

23. Bike, scooter, or skate-a-thon

Head to the local skate park or open area for some riding fun! Let your grandkids ride their bikes, scooters, or roller skates and show off their cool moves. I like to go when it’s not too busy so they have lots of space. Just remember the helmets and kneepads!

24. Beach day

Grab the sunscreen, beach towels, and sand toys—it’s time for a beach day! Build sandcastles, splash in the water, and hunt for seashells with your grandkids. You can even toss a frisbee or beach ball for extra fun. Don’t live near the ocean? That’s okay! Many lakes and reservoirs have sandy shores and fun water activities too.

25. Neighborhood “I-Spy”

Who doesn’t love a good game of “I-Spy”? Go for a walk around your neighborhood, downtown area, or even a local garden. Take turns spotting fun things, colors, or shapes. It’s simple, but it’s always a blast!

Like I said—you don’t have to spend a lot of money to have fun with your grandkids. Honestly, sometimes the less you spend, the more fun you end up having! I hope this list gave you lots of new ideas to try.

I’d love to hear which ones you do together!
