If you’ve ever felt like you have a special connection with your grandchildren, you’re not alone. You don’t love them more than your own children; it’s just a different kind of love. And guess what? Scientists are starting to understand why this happens.
Many grandmothers, just like you, tend to be more easygoing and loving with their grandkids. A recent study looked into this by using brain scans. The grandmothers looked at pictures of their grandchildren, other children, and their own children. The study helped explain why grandmothers feel so close to their grandchildren.

People often say that one reason women might live longer than men is because they play a big part in their grandchildren’s lives. It makes sense!
When grandmothers look at pictures of their grandkids, a part of their brain that helps with feelings lights up. This shows that grandmothers are naturally ready to feel close to their grandkids. But when they see pictures of their own children, a different part of the brain works. This part (emotional empathy) helps them think and understand what their children need.
Scientists are still learning more about this, but their studies help us see that it really does take many people to help raise a child. Not just parents change when a baby is born; grandparents change too!
