Here’s What Wise Grandmas Are Actually Doing to Raise Generous Grandkids

Sharing is caring!

You’ve probably heard the saying, “It’s better to give than to receive.” As grandmas, we know how true that is! Nothing beats the joy of seeing our grandkids smile when we show them love.

Of course, it’s fun to spoil them with treats and gifts. But it’s also important to teach them how to give to others. That’s why I want to share some fun and simple ways to help our grandkids learn to be kind and generous.

We can play games that teach sharing. We can also volunteer together to help people in our community. There are so many ways to teach them about caring for others. Let’s get started and spread kindness together!

1. Make Donating a Game

A fun way to teach your grandchild about giving is to turn it into a game. Ask them to find three toys they don’t use anymore. Then, help them put the toys in a box.

After that, go together to drop off the box at a local charity. This teaches your grandchild to be kind and to help others in their community.

2. Make a Giving Jar

A giving jar is a fun way to teach your grandchild about helping others. First, decorate a jar together with stickers or markers. Then, encourage your grandchild to put in spare change or part of their allowance each week.

When the jar is full, help them pick a charity or cause they care about. Letting them choose where the money goes helps them feel proud and excited about giving.

3. Praise Generous Acts

When your grandchild does something kind, be sure to notice! Give them a big smile, a hug, or a high-five. You can even give them a small treat or extra playtime. Praising their kindness helps them feel proud and encourages them to keep being thoughtful and generous.

4. Read Stories About Giving

Books are a great way to teach kids about kindness. Try reading stories like The More You Give by Marcy Campbell or One Small Spark by Ruth Spiro. After reading, talk about how the characters shared and gave to others. These stories can help your grandchild understand why it feels good to be kind and giving.

5. Talk About How Giving Feels

Talking about how it feels to give is important. Share a time when you felt happy after helping someone. Then ask your grandchild how they feel when they share. Connecting giving with good feelings helps them see why generosity matters and builds a habit that can last a lifetime.

6. Make Homemade Gifts Together

Making gifts by hand can be a fun way to show love and kindness. You and your grandchild can bake cookies, paint a picture, or make a card for someone special. While you create the gift, talk about how giving something from the heart can make someone’s day. It also helps your grandchild see how good it feels to give.

7. Choose Experiences Over Stuff

You can help your grandchild see that fun experiences matter more than getting lots of stuff. Try planning a special day together—like going to the park, walking in the woods, or visiting a museum.

While you’re having fun, talk about how these moments make lasting memories. Show them that sharing time with people is a kind and thoughtful way to give. This helps your grandchild see that being generous isn’t just about money—it’s also about making happy memories with others.

8. Talk About People Who Need Help

Sometimes it’s hard for kids to understand that others may be going through tough times. You can help by talking about it in simple ways.

For example, tell your grandchild that some families don’t have enough food, or some kids don’t have toys or books. Then, you can think together about ways to help—like donating items or raising money. This helps your grandchild learn to care about others.

9. Help Out in the Community

Doing service projects together is a great way to teach kindness. You can volunteer at a food bank or soup kitchen. Your grandchild can help pack boxes or hand out food. While you work, talk about how their help makes a difference for others.

As grandmas, we have a special chance to teach our grandkids how to be kind, caring, and generous.

When we show generosity in our own lives, encourage giving, and focus on fun experiences instead of just things, we help our grandkids learn the joy of helping others. Little by little, we can spread love and kindness in our families, our neighborhoods, and even the world.

Thank you for being a wonderful grandma. Keep up the great work—you’re making a big difference!
