After Passing Away, a Grandmother’s Hidden Letter Shook the Entire Family

If you’ve been following Grandmawise for a while, you know I usually like to keep things fun and cheerful. So today’s topic might surprise you. (It even surprised me!)

I don’t like thinking about death or leaving my family behind. But I know it’s a part of life. And being prepared can bring peace—not just for us, but for our loved ones too.

Not long ago, a family wrote to me. They wanted to stay anonymous, but they shared something very special: a letter their sweet grandma wrote before she passed away. She had written notes for each of her children and grandchildren. The family found them in her nightstand while sorting through her things.

They said her words brought them so much comfort—and they hope it might help others going through a loss, too.

So grab some tissues. You might need them. (I know I did.)

Here is the note they shared, in hopes it will inspire you like it did me.

To My Dearest Grandchildren,

If you are reading this, it means my time here is drawing to a close, and I’m getting ready to go Home—to be with the One who has carried me all these years, and with your grandpa, who’s probably already found the best fishing spot in heaven and saved me a seat.

There’s so much I wish I could still say face to face. So many more hugs I wish I could give. But this letter is my way of wrapping you in one more.

I want you to know: being your grandma has been the joy of my life. Every giggle, every story, every little drawing taped to my fridge—I’ve held them all close to my heart. You were never just “my grandchildren”—you were my sunshine on cloudy days, my reason to keep going when things got hard, and the answer to so many of my prayers.

When I was a little girl, I used to dream of having a big family. Not a fancy one. Just one full of love and laughter and loud holiday dinners. And I got it. I got you.

As I go, I want to leave behind a few little pieces of my heart for you to carry:

Be kind, even when it’s hard. Especially when it’s hard.

Laugh often—especially at yourself. It’ll keep you humble and happy.

Pray before you worry. And then trust that God’s got it handled.

Make room at your table. You never know who might need a seat.

And never forget: your worth doesn’t come from what you do—it comes from who you are.

You are loved. Just as you are. Always have been, always will be.

One day, when you’re missing me, I hope you’ll sit outside with a warm drink, feel the breeze on your face, and know I’m near. I’ll be the whisper in the trees, the twinkle in the stars, the nudge in your heart to do the right thing.

Live fully, love deeply, and keep making me proud.

Until we meet again—save me a dance at the big family party in heaven.

With all the love in the world,
Grandma

Give your loved ones a big hug today, especially those sweet grandbabies!

Talk to you again soon.

Your friend, Grandmawise
