Have you ever tried to put into words how much your grandson or granddaughter means to you? It’s really tough to do! For me, it feels like the biggest and purest kind of love.
When I look at my grandchild, my heart is so full it could burst. I try to tell them, “I love you to the moon and back, to infinity and beyond, times a bajillion!”
But even those big words don’t quite capture it all. I just want them to know how important they are to me, their grandma.
Do you feel that way too?
I wasn’t sure how to express all this love, so I started writing a letter. I hope that one day they’ll read it and truly understand how special and loved they are.
To My Dearest Grandchild,
As you grow, you’ll discover many kinds of love, each deeper as you get older.
I remember being your age, convinced nothing could top the love I had for my parents and my dog. That felt like true love to me.
Then came high school, where my crushes on movie stars and classmates made me think I’d found the real deal.
But nothing compared to marrying your grandpa. Our wedding day felt like a scene from an old romantic movie.
When your mom or dad came along, my heart grew in ways I never imagined. I thought I knew true love, but they showed me more.
Yet, the moment you were born topped it all. Learning we’d be grandparents filled us with indescribable joy and hope.
Holding you for the first time, I was in awe, noticing features from your parents and even my dimple on your chin. I knew then what true love really is.
I wanted to freeze time, keep you safe and small forever. But life is about growing and learning.
Every new stage with you has been wonderful. Your smiles, your first steps, your giggles—they all make my heart soar.
Holding your hand, receiving your drawings, and hearing you call me “grandma” are my greatest joys.
As you grow, remember I’m always here for you. Life can be tough, but it’s also filled with beauty and love.
I pray you find strength in challenges, kindness in tough times, and love in every corner.
You’re the perfect grandchild, loved immensely, more than words can say. You are my heart, my joy—my truest love.
With all my love, Grandma
Being a grandma is a wonderful thing, and it’s not easy to explain just how special a grandchild is. I really hope that one day, my grandchild reads this and feels how much love and treasure I hold for them in my heart.
With all my love, your one and only Grandma. ❤️
How do you write a meaningful letter to your grandchild?
Writing a letter to my grandkids was harder than I thought. It was tough to put my deep feelings for them into words on paper. I really had to sit down and focus to even try to capture a little bit of my love for them. But, I’m so happy I did it.
I learned a lot from this experience. If you have a grandchild you love — whether it’s a grandson or granddaughter — you might want to try writing them a letter too. Here are some tips to help you get started:
1. Keep it short and sweet
A great letter doesn’t have to be long; it can be just a few sentences or a couple of paragraphs. What really matters is that the words are heartfelt, not how many there are. Don’t worry about making it too long!
2. Focus on the positive
Instead of saying things like “I love you even though you don’t excel at football,” just stick to the happy stuff. This letter should make your grandchild feel loved and special. Avoid phrases like “I love you, but…” — there’s no need for that here. This letter is a place for your grandchild to feel your love, especially when they might doubt it.
Before you finish, read through your letter and take out any negative or critical comments. Make sure there are no complaints, negative comparisons, or back-handed compliments. This letter is a celebration of all the good things about your grandchild, something to lift their spirits!
3. Be honest and open
Sometimes, we’re not sure how our kids feel about us. It can be tempting to pull back or guard our feelings, but don’t let that stop you. When writing to your teen, for example, don’t worry if they might think it’s cheesy.
Just be truthful. Share your deep love for them openly and don’t worry about their reaction. Remember, even if they don’t respond as you hope, your words are important and can really make a difference. Every kid needs to hear they are loved, even if they act like they don’t.
4. Use words of affirmation
Make sure to use the phrases “I love you” and “I am proud of you.” Kids really need to hear these words. And look, you’ve already got two sentences down!
Let them know that your love is unconditional, based on who they are, not on what they achieve. This shows them that no matter what, you’ll always love them.
