As a grandma, one of my greatest joys is seeing my grandchildren grow and learn.
I believe one of the best gifts I can give them is a love for learning. When kids enjoy learning, it helps them do well in school and in life.
The good news is, there are many fun and easy ways to spark their curiosity and help them enjoy discovering new things. Here are some of my favorite ways to help my grandkids love learning. I hope they work for you too!
1. Share What You Love
We’ve learned a lot over the years, and now it’s our turn to share! If you enjoy history, visit a museum together and tell fun stories about the past. If you love books, read with your grandchild and talk about the story.
You can even teach them how to knit, garden, or cook. When they see your excitement, they might catch the learning bug too!
2. Read, Read, and Read Some More
Reading with our grandkids helps them learn new words and understand stories better. Make it extra fun by using silly voices, acting out parts of the story, or even making your own books together. Reading time can be learning time and memory-making time!
3. Use Technology to Learn Together
Technology makes learning fun and easy. There are lots of apps, games, and websites that help kids explore new ideas while having a good time. Try some of these with your grandchild and learn together!
Here are some great tools to check out:
- National Geographic Kids – Watch videos, read fun articles, and take quizzes about animals, science, and nature.
- Duolingo – Learn new languages like Spanish, French, or German with short, fun lessons.
- PBS Kids – Play games and do activities with favorite characters from shows like Sesame Street and Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood.
- Prodigy – This free math game helps kids build math skills while playing adventures and taking quizzes.
- NASA Kids Club – Learn about space, science, and technology through fun games and activities from NASA.
- Ted-Ed – Watch short videos that teach cool things about science, history, reading, and more.
Exploring these together can make screen time feel like smart time!
4. Play Smart Games Together
Learning can be fun—especially when it feels like play! Try board games or puzzles that help with thinking, solving problems, or learning new words. And if you can’t find the perfect game, you can always make one up together. Who knows? You might invent something amazing!
5. Make Learning About Them
Every child is different. They have their own likes and ways of learning. So let’s make learning special just for them!
If your grandchild loves music, go to a concert or show them how to play an instrument. If they enjoy sports, watch a game together and talk about the rules. When we connect learning to their interests, it becomes more fun—and we get special one-on-one time too.
6. Turn Everyday Moments into Learning Time
As grandmas, we know that learning doesn’t only happen in school. We can teach during everyday activities!
At the grocery store, ask your grandchild to count items or compare prices. When baking cookies, talk about how the ingredients work together—it’s like a fun science experiment. And the best part? You get to eat the results!
7. Go Outside and Explore
Sometimes the best learning happens outside! Let’s take our grandkids on a walk in nature. We can look at plants, listen for birds, and talk about the world around us. Try spotting different animals or naming trees and flowers. Every walk can turn into a fun learning adventure!
8. Go on Learning Adventures
Museums and exhibits are great places to explore together. Pick one that matches what your grandchild enjoys—like science, art, or history. These trips help them learn in new ways and may even spark a new interest. (And if you’re looking for a cool gift, a museum membership is a great idea!)
9. Encourage Questions and Curiosity
Kids love to ask questions—and that’s a great thing! Let’s support their curiosity by answering their questions and asking a few of our own.
If we don’t know the answer, we can look it up together. We might even learn something that surprises both of us!
10. Celebrate Big and Small Wins
When our grandkids do well in school or reach a goal they’ve worked hard on, let’s cheer them on! A big hug, kind words, or even a small treat can show how proud we are. Celebrating their success helps them feel good about learning and encourages them to keep going.
Conclusion: Let’s Make Learning Fun
Helping our grandkids love learning is one of the best things we can do for them. There are so many fun ways to do it—playing learning games, going outside to explore, using apps, or volunteering together.
Each moment is a chance to grow their knowledge and build important life skills. So, what are we waiting for? Let’s jump in, have fun, and help our grandkids become curious, confident learners!
