Looking for a fun treat to make with your grandkids?

Try these Colorful Stained Glass Cookies! They’re yummy, bright, and a great way to be creative together in the kitchen.

You will need:

  • 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 cup unsalted butter (softened)
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon almond extract (optional)
  • Food coloring (any kind works)
  • Crushed hard candies (like Jolly Ranchers or Life Savers)

Let’s get baking!

  1. Mix the dry stuff.
In a bowl, stir together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Set it aside.
  2. Cream the butter and sugar.
In a bigger bowl, beat the butter and sugar until it’s light and fluffy.
  3. Add the wet ingredients.
Mix in the egg, vanilla, and almond extract if you’re using it.
  4. Combine everything.
Slowly mix the dry ingredients into the wet ones until you have cookie dough.
  5. Add color.
Divide the dough into a few balls. Add food coloring to each and mix well.
  6. Chill the dough.
Wrap each dough ball in plastic and place them in the fridge for 1 hour.
  7. Preheat the oven.
Set it to 350°F (175°C). Line two baking sheets with parchment paper.
  8. Roll and cut.
Roll out each dough ball between parchment paper to about 1/4 inch thick. Use cookie cutters to make fun shapes.
  9. Make the windows.
Cut small shapes inside each cookie. Save the tiny pieces for extra treats.
  10. Add the candy.
Fill the little windows with crushed candies. Don’t overfill!
  11. Bake.
Bake for 7–9 minutes, until the edges are golden and the candy is melted.
  12. Cool.
Let the cookies sit on the pan for a few minutes, then move them to a cooling rack. It’s important to let the cookies cool before eating.

Now you have bright, sweet cookies that look like stained glass! They’re almost too pretty to eat… but go ahead—enjoy them together!
