When my kids were young, we made blessing bags to give to people who looked like they were having a hard day. These small bags often brought smiles to others—and they helped my kids learn how good it feels to be kind and help someone else.

Now that I’m a grandma, I still make blessing bags. But this time, I do it with my grandkids! It’s a fun and meaningful activity we can all do together.

Here’s what blessing bags are and how you and your grandkids can make them together. I think you and your family will love it, too.

What is a blessing bag?

A pair of hands holds a brown paper bag filled with non-perishable food items, including a stack of wrapped crackers, a jar of chickpeas, and two canned goods. A white slip of paper with the word "DONATE" in bold letters is tucked inside the bag. The background is a solid light blue.
A simple yet fulfilling activity.

A blessing bag is a simple way to show kindness. It’s a small bag filled with helpful items for people who don’t have a home. These bags can bring comfort, hope, and a little joy to someone going through a tough time.

When you give someone a blessing bag, it shows that you care. It’s a small act, but it can make a big difference. It’s a reminder that kindness matters—and that even one person can help make the world a little better.

How to make a blessing bag

Making a blessing bag is a kind and thoughtful way to help others. It’s also a great activity to do with your grandkids! Here’s a simple guide to get started:

1. Pick the right bag

Start by choosing a strong bag that can hold everything. You can use a ziplock bag, a reusable grocery bag, or even a small backpack. Try to pick something sturdy that can handle different kinds of weather.

These paper bags with handles are perfect.

Paper bags work great for blessing bags—especially the ones with handles! If you want to make it extra special, let your grandkids decorate the outside. (Mine love doing this—it’s one of their favorite parts!)

No matter how many blessing bags you want to make, I suggest buying the items in bulk. Trust me—it saves money and makes putting the bags together a lot easier!

2. Gather helpful items

Next, gather items that can bring comfort and care to someone in need. You’ll want to include snacks and drinks like granola bars, crackers, trail mix, canned food with pull-tabs, and bottled water.

Hygiene supplies are also very important—travel-size toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap, hand sanitizer, tissues, deodorant, and sanitary pads can make a big difference. Warm clothing items such as socks, gloves, scarves, and hats—especially during the colder months—are always appreciated.

You can also add a few extras like a reusable water bottle, a small phone card, or a list of nearby shelters to offer even more support.

3. Pack the bag

Put everything neatly in the bag. Try to place heavier things like canned food or water bottles at the bottom so they don’t squish anything soft.

4. Add a personal note

This part is optional, but very special. A short, handwritten note with kind words can brighten someone’s day. Your grandkids can even draw pictures or add a small craft to make it extra sweet.

5. Give it out

Keep a few blessing bags in your car, so you’re ready when you see someone in need. Or, you can take the bags to a local shelter and ask if they can give them out for you. Giving regularly not only helps others—it also teaches kids the joy of kindness and the value of looking out for one another.

Love grows by giving

Making a blessing bag is a small act of kindness that can make a big difference. It gives someone in need a little help and shows them that someone cares. That kind of love and compassion can mean the world.

Enjoy this special project, fellow grandma!
