Getting older can be surprising and sometimes a bit scary. So it’s important to step back once in a while, relax, and have a good laugh about yourself! Because laughing at yourself is a great way to have fun. 😀

Back in 2009, the Home Instead Senior Care facility had a big meeting. They asked their friend, Mary Maxwell, to start the meeting with a prayer. But what the audience didn’t expect was Mary’s funny twist!

Mary walked up to the microphone and everyone thought she would just say a normal prayer, but she surprised everyone. She joked in such a funny way that it made everyone laugh a lot!

She began by sharing a bit about herself and then joked about the two things people are always curious about but too polite to ask—how old you are and how much you weigh!

Mary’s deadpan delivery and poise up on the stage took everyone by surprise.

Mary goes on to explain that sometimes older people might not seem very friendly or easy to love. She asks everyone to be patient and explains, “You don’t get to practice being old. This is my first time, and it kind of sneaked up on me!” The audience really enjoys her straight-faced jokes and laughs a lot!

My favorite joke is about how tough it is for older people to exercise. She says, “I tried to jog once, but it made the wine jump right out of my glass!” Isn’t that the truth? 😀

At the end of her speech, Mary shares a poem from a newsletter at a retirement home. It makes everyone feel a bit more serious and touched. But, true to her style, she finishes with one last joke that has everyone laughing again.

Be sure to watch the whole speech in the video below!
