This year has had its fair share of shocking divorces in the worlds of politics and entertainment, but one story stands out above the rest.
A 99-year-old man in Italy, Antonio, decided to end his marriage to his 96-year-old wife, Rosa, after being married for 77 years. The reason? Just before Christmas, he found old love letters hidden in a chest of drawers. Those letters revealed that Rosa had an affair more than 60 years ago.
When Antonio asked her about it, Rosa admitted the truth and begged him to stay. But even after nearly eight decades of life together, Antonio couldn’t let it go. He chose to move forward with divorce.
Their marriage wasn’t without blessings, though. Together, Antonio and Rosa raised five children, welcomed twelve grandchildren, and even became great-grandparents to one little one. They first met in the 1930s, when Antonio was serving with the Italian Carabinieri in Rosa’s hometown of Naples.
If the divorce is finalized, they will hold the record as the world’s oldest divorcees, beating out another couple from Britain who divorced at age 98 after 36 years of marriage.
It’s a bittersweet story—one filled with love, family, history, and also heartbreak.
