Jimmy Stewart was a famous American actor. He starred in many movies and TV shows from 1935 to 1991. People loved him because he seemed like a regular, kind man. He spoke with a calm voice and was easy to relate to.
In the early part of his career, Jimmy put acting on hold to join the U.S. Army. He served in World War II from 1941 to 1947. When he came back, he returned to acting with a big hit: It’s a Wonderful Life.
Later in 1984, Jimmy joined a group of stars on a TV special called The Funniest Joke I Ever Heard. It was co-produced by Dick Clark and aired on ABC. The idea was simple—famous people shared their favorite jokes on camera.
The first episode aired on May 21, 1984, and even included Kermit the Frog and Miss Piggy. The second episode aired on November 27, 1984, without the Muppets.
Besides Jimmy Stewart, other stars on the show included Cyndi Lauper, Jack Lemmon, William Shatner, Martin Sheen, George Burns, and Victor Borge.
In the video below, Jimmy tells his favorite joke in his usual calm and funny way. The joke is about a wife who asks her husband if he would get remarried if she passed away. He tries to enjoy breakfast, but she keeps asking—again and again for three days! Finally, the husband says, “Yes, I probably would.”
“Would you sell the house?” she asks.
“No,” he replies.
“Would you sell our bed?”
“No, I don’t think I would.”
Then she says, “Well, you certainly wouldn’t let her touch my golf clubs…”
He answers quickly: “Of course not!”
Oops—he gave himself away! 😄 It’s such a funny moment, and only Jimmy Stewart could tell it like that. You’ve got to see it!
