Kids born in the 2000s often feel like anything from the 1900s is ancient history. One day, a teacher asked his class what they thought was the hardest part of growing up in the 1980s. Their answers were both funny and eye-opening—and a gentle reminder that maybe we need to share a little more history with today’s kids.
The students wrote their answers on little sticky notes, and some of them were pretty wild. The very first one said, “Dealing with tuberculosis.”
That really set the stage for the rest!
Another one read, “Having to read books to not be bored.” As a book lover, that one tugged at my heart. What a difference just 40 years can make in how kids see the world.
One student even thought kids in the ’80s drank from the garden hose just for fun. The truth is, we really did! On hot days, after running around outside, that hose water felt like the best drink in the world. It wasn’t fancy, but it sure was refreshing. And yes—back then we stayed outside all day long.
Growing up in the ’80s came with its own adventures. Some kids had paper routes or after-school jobs, and everyone remembers changing the TV channel without a remote. Can you imagine? And of course, there were no cell phones.
A bike, though—that was the real treasure. Not having one felt like you were missing out on a whole world of fun.
Looking back now, it really wasn’t such a bad time to grow up. We had our worries, but we also had so many simple joys.
Do you remember those days with a smile? If so, you’re not alone.
