The Ten Commandments of Being a Grandma

Sharing is caring!

Before I begin, I want you to know that I never mean to hurt or upset anyone with what I share. To be sure, I even talked with my pastor before writing this. He assured me that this topic is fun, light-hearted, and not disrespectful in any way. That’s exactly how I hope it feels to you as you read!

If you’ve studied the Bible, gone to church or synagogue, or even watched the old Cecil B. DeMille movie, you already know about the Ten Commandments and how important they are to people of faith.

But did you know that we grandmas have our own “commandments” too—special little rules of love and wisdom that guide us in our role? Just for fun, I’ve put together what I like to call The Ten Commandments of Being a Grandma. Here they are:

1. Thou Shalt Go to Church or Synagogue and Share Your Faith with Your Grandkids

When I was little, my grandma was one of the strongest examples of faith in my life. Every Sunday, she was in church, living out her beliefs with love and kindness. Now that I’m the grandma, I want my grandkids to see the same in me. We don’t have to push too hard or scare them away—sometimes the best way to share our faith is by showing it in how we treat others and live each day.

2. Thou Shalt Not Be Too Quick to Say No

Of course, if something is unsafe or really out of bounds, we have to step in. But most of the time, saying “yes” makes for the sweetest memories. Grandmas have a special way of loving and spoiling that no one else can. A late bedtime now and then, or even ice cream for dinner, won’t hurt a thing—it just makes the bond even stronger.

3. Thou Shalt Be the Keeper of Family History

Keep the family history and tradition alive!

In today’s busy world, it’s easy for people to forget their roots. That’s why we grandmas have such an important role—we get to keep the stories of our family alive. Whether it’s making a family tree, writing in a journal, or even recording our voices, we can help our grandkids know where they came from. Don’t worry, it doesn’t have to be perfect. What matters most is sharing those memories with love.

4. Thou Shalt Never Miss a Big Event

As a grandma, you’re your grandchild’s biggest fan. That’s why it means so much to be there for their special moments—like preschool graduations, baseball games, or dance recitals. And if you really can’t make it, a quick phone call, a video chat, or even a small card or gift lets them know you’re still cheering for them. What matters most is showing your grandkids they can always count on your love and support.

5. Thou Shalt Honor the “Other” Grandma

Family situations can sometimes be tricky, but one thing is certain—you should never speak badly about your grandchild’s other grandparents. Even if you like to think you’re the “favorite,” remember that it’s a blessing for your grandchild to be surrounded by so much love. The more people who love them, the better!

6. Thou Shalt Keep the Tradition Alive

Traditions are one of the most special gifts we can pass down. Maybe it’s baking a family recipe together, decorating for the holidays, or sharing a story that’s been told for generations. As Grandma, you are the link between the past and the future, and it’s your joyful job to carry the family torch. These little traditions become the memories your grandkids will treasure forever.

7. Thou Shalt Always Have Room on Your Lap

No matter how big your grandkids get (and yes, they grow fast!), there should always be space on Grandma’s lap—and even more space in your heart. Think back to when you were little and how safe and loved you felt sitting on your grandma’s lap. Now you get to give that same magical comfort to your own grandbabies. Treasure it!

8. Thou Shalt Encourage a Lifelong Love of Learning

Cultivate the love for learning!

From teaching them to tie their shoes to sharing the wonders of the world, you get to be one of their greatest teachers. Your wisdom and life stories are gifts no one else can give. Nurture their curiosity, cheer on their questions, and remind them that learning is a wonderful adventure that never ends.

9. Thou Shalt Always Have Cookies and Treats

Grandmas are known for their goodies—whether it’s candy tucked in your purse, a plate of homemade chocolate chip cookies, or even a box of store-bought snacks waiting in the pantry. Grandkids will always remember the special treats they enjoyed at your house. Those little goodies often become sweet memories that remind them of the comfort and love they felt with you.

10. Thou Shalt Never Forget—You’re the Best!

And finally, Grandma, don’t ever forget—you really are the best! In your grandkids’ eyes, you can do no wrong. You’re the picture of love, comfort, and warmth. Every moment you share with them is a gift, and being a grandma truly is the best job in the world.

Conclusion
So there you have it—the Ten Commandments of Being a Grandma! They aren’t just rules, but reminders of the joy, love, and laughter that come with this special role. Go ahead and spread kindness, pass along your wisdom, and most of all, enjoy every second of this amazing journey called “grandmahood.” And don’t be a stranger—let’s talk again soon!
