There’s nothing quite like the bond between a grandchild and their grandparents. I was lucky to grow up seeing mine often—sometimes more than once a week! We made so many special memories together. It’s a different kind of friendship, and now, I try my best to be that same kind of grandparent for my own grandkids.
In the video below, you’ll meet Maddie and her grandma, Shirley. They’ve always been close—best friends from the very start! But now, 85-year-old Shirley is living with dementia. She still understands what’s happening around her, but her memory isn’t what it used to be. The sweet part? She gets to enjoy some moments as if they’re brand new—again and again.
Maddie recently got engaged to her boyfriend, Cole, who serves in the U.S. Air Force. When she first told her grandma the exciting news, Shirley lit up with pure joy! Maddie knew her grandma might forget, so she recorded the moment and shares the news with her again from time to time—just to see her smile. 😊
Now, they share something even more special. Shirley’s late husband also served in the Air Force. He passed away during the Vietnam War, but even now, Shirley remembers him with love. Maddie hopes this story helps others understand dementia a little better—and reminds us that even small acts of love can bring big joy.
