An Open Letter Every Grandma Needs to Read This Christmas

Sharing is caring!

Christmastime is here… and I can hardly believe we’re already at the end of another year. When I was a little girl, it felt like Christmas took forever to arrive. The days dragged on, the nights felt long, and the waiting was half the magic. Now? The years seem to slip by faster than I’m ready for, and suddenly we’re packing away ornaments again.

I wanted to pause in the middle of all the noise and busyness and simply check in with you.

How are you really doing?

This season is supposed to be merry and bright, full of smiles and laughter and picture-perfect moments. But life doesn’t always line up with the songs on the radio or the cards in the store. If your heart feels a little heavy this year, please know you’re not alone.

Maybe this is your first Christmas without someone you love deeply, and every tradition feels different now. Maybe the cost of groceries, gifts, and everyday living has added a quiet stress you don’t talk about much. Or maybe family gatherings feel complicated, filled with emotions you wish would just settle already.

Whatever you’re carrying, I want you to know I see you.

I wrote this for you—to remind you that it’s okay if everything isn’t perfect, and it’s okay if you’re doing the best you can and calling that enough.

To My Beloved Grandma,

It’s funny how time works, isn’t it? One moment we were little girls counting the days until Christmas morning, and the next we’re the ones watching our grandchildren’s eyes sparkle as the season arrives. Sometimes I catch myself wondering how we got here so fast. The years seem to slip by quietly, almost without asking permission.

When we were young, Christmas felt simple and full of wonder. And while that magic is still there, I know the season can feel heavier now, too. So I wanted to pause for a moment and gently ask you something that doesn’t get asked enough this time of year… how are you really doing?

Between the shopping lists, the baking, the planning, and the expectations, it’s easy to put ourselves last. Maybe you’re carrying a quiet ache for someone who should be sitting at the table this year. Maybe your family looks a little different than you hoped, or distance has kept loved ones far away. Or perhaps old family tensions have a way of showing up right when we wish they wouldn’t.

If any of that sounds familiar, please know this: you are not alone. And you don’t need to pretend everything is fine if it isn’t. Christmas doesn’t have to look perfect to be meaningful. Some of the most real, sacred moments come from simply allowing ourselves to feel what’s in our hearts.

If things feel heavy, I hope you’ll reach out to someone you trust. A friend, a sister, a fellow grandma who understands. Even this letter is a small reminder that someone is thinking of you and holding space for you.

And just in case you need to hear it today, your value as a grandma isn’t found in perfectly wrapped gifts or a spotless house. It’s in your hugs, your listening ear, your stories, and the love you give so freely. That is what your family will remember long after the decorations are packed away.

This Christmas, I hope you find a few quiet moments just for you. Maybe it’s a warm mug in your hands, a favorite old movie, a prayer whispered in the early morning, or the sound of your grandchildren laughing from the next room. These small moments are the ones that truly matter.

I’m wishing you a Christmas filled with peace, comfort, and gentle joy. However your holiday looks this year, please know you are deeply appreciated and dearly loved. You are doing more than enough, and you are a blessing to those around you.

With love and warm wishes,
Your Friend,
Grandmawise

As this season comes to a close, I hope you give yourself permission to breathe a little deeper and move a little slower. You’ve made it through another year, carrying more than most people ever see, and that alone is something to be proud of.

May the days ahead hold small moments that quietly warm your heart—unexpected kindness, gentle laughter, and the comfort of knowing you are deeply valued. And if some days still feel heavy, remember this: you don’t have to walk through them alone.

I’m sending you love, peace, and the reminder that brighter moments still lie ahead. However this season finds you, I’m grateful you’re here, and I’m wishing you a tender, hopeful close to the year and a new one filled with grace.
