Every Grandma Needs to Read This “Dear Abby” Story

Who else remembers reading Dear Abby? I feel like I’ve been following her column forever—almost since it first began back in 1956! Her advice was always honest, wise, and full of heart.

The original “Dear Abby” was written by Pauline Phillips, who used the pen name Abigail Van Buren. Though Pauline has passed on, her daughter Jeanne has beautifully carried on her mother’s legacy. She still shares thoughtful, down-to-earth advice that feels just as relevant today.

A black-and-white newspaper clipping of a “Dear Abby” advice column. The letter is from a “Wise Woman in North Carolina” sharing a heartfelt message about loneliness among seniors. She reminds readers that as children and grandchildren grow up, older family members often feel forgotten. The woman urges younger generations to call or visit their elderly loved ones more often, emphasizing that time and attention are the greatest gifts one can give. The column includes a photo of “Dear Abby” smiling, with the byline “Syndicated columnist.”
Dear Abby

I’ve read many of her columns over the years, but this one really stopped me in my tracks. I think you’ll see why when you read what a “Wise Woman in North Carolina” had to say.
