As we grow older, it’s easy to think the best adventures are behind us. But that’s not true at all. New friendships can be made at any age, and they can change our lives in the sweetest ways.
Sam Evanz has seen this firsthand in the local softball league her husband plays in. There are 14 players on the team, and every single one of them is valued, loved, and celebrated like family.
Still, there’s one teammate who shines a little brighter. He’s 81 years old now, but he first joined the team as a rookie when he was 69. That alone says so much about his spirit.
He loves his teammates dearly. So much so that, one night at 2:30 in the morning, he sent a heartfelt message to the group chat. The note was so long it couldn’t even fit into one image!

In his message, he wrote:
“But I do know, this will be the year of ball I will remember. All because of 14 great people. I will do my best to contribute to the team, but some days are better than others. Now… I got that off my chest, I will try to go to la la land again.”
It’s no surprise that his touching words brought tears to more than just his teammates—people online are feeling emotional too. His teammates didn’t miss a beat and sent back their own heartfelt replies.
And for anyone wondering if this wonderful group has a team photo—sadly, not yet. But Sam is hopeful they’ll get one soon.
“They don’t have a team picture yet,” she said with a smile. “But hopefully we’ll snap one when they win the championship.”
